Concerns over the novel coronavirus have caused volatility in oil markets, impacting Alaska's financial resources. Due to the uncertainty, the state has put an immediate hiring freeze in place and suspended out-of-state travel for all employees.

A memorandum sent out Monday by the governor's chief of staff notified all commissioners of the decision.

The hiring freeze applies to all positions except for those necessary to protect public health and safety.
