The future of Anchorage's Captain James Cook statue is under review, as petitions and vandals have targeted other monuments honoring Cook across the globe.

Anchorage's statue of Cook, which stands at Resolution Park, looking out over the shore of Cook Inlet, is a duplicate of the statue at Whitby, Yorkshire, England, near Cook's birthplace, according to the Captain Cook Society

The plaque on the statue reads, in part:

"James Cook, a farm hand’s son who became a Captain in the Royal Navy and gold medalist of the Royal Society, lives in history as the greatest explorer-navigator the world has known. His real memorial is on the map of the world."
