Juneau Police say they are investigating the death of a man who was taken to a "sleep-off center" after he was found walking intoxicated around downtown on Sunday afternoon.

JPD says around 1:30, Steven Jay West, 57, was picked up by Rainforest Recovery and taken to a sleep-off center until he sobered up.

West was walking and talking before he was medically cleared and admitted to the center, according to police. Just after 4 o'clock, staff was doing a routine check and found West unresponsive. Medics from Capital City Fire/Rescue attempted lifesaving measures but were not successful.
