Alaska’s congressional delegation and its Republican colleagues in Washington brought home one great Christmas present for Alaskans.
The tax bill containing a provision to open a small part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling promises to become the foundation of Alaska’s economy for a generation or more.
We won’t see the benefits from the measure for a few years yet — and now is not when we need them. But the economic activity related to exploring and drilling a 2,000-acre piece of the ANWR Coastal Plain will almost certainly give the state a substantial boost over an extended period.
