If anyone thinks the state’s free-money program isn’t out of control, tell them to look at the idea being pushed by Governor Bill Walker and the Democrats to impose a state payroll tax.
The tax would nominally guarantee that Alaskans will get their Permanent Fund dividend checks, the full amount, not the half-dividends that Walker has imposed on us recently.
I love my dividend check as much as the next guy and use it every year to pay down credit card balances. But imposing an income tax to make sure we can pay dividends is a terrible idea. It is income redistribution in the most flagrant way, a communist notion if I ever saw one.
