A year after a 16-year-old boy was mauled to death by a black bear at the Bird Ridge mountain race, spectators spotted another one on the trail just before the juniors race started Sunday morning.

Dozens of racers lined up for the 30th annual Bird Ridge Race Sunday morning with a total of three waves competing: timed, untimed and Jack's Run, named after Patrick "Jack" Cooper who was mauled and killed by a bear during last year's race.
