The Alaska State Trooper who shot and killed a Palmer man carrying a machete on Thanksgiving Day was also involved in a fatal Palmer shooting more than two years ago.

Trooper Christopher Havens, a six-year veteran of the force, was named in an online dispatch Sunday evening as the person who killed 20-year-old Palmer resident Cameron McCarthy on Thursday near the Eagle Hotel.

Havens and other troopers had responded that afternoon to support local police in the Palmer Train Depot area, where McCarthy had been brandishing a machete and refusing to cooperate with officers. After hours of negotiations and attempts to use less-lethal munitions against McCarthy, who was barricaded in a room, he eventually climbed onto the hotel’s sign and back down to street level.
