Phase one of Anchorage's port modernization project has started, according to its executives.
On Tuesday, Port of Alaska Director Steve Ribuffo explained some of the work that's been done to build a new dock. He says crews mixed soil and cement to build a concrete block underwater that will support the dock and stabilize the shore.
"The (stabilized) shoreline, that is far more survivable and resilient in an earthquake condition than just the natural soils would be," Ribuffo said. "The theory is it's not going to move, while what's around it will move."
