The Democrat-controlled U.S. House of Representatives has approved a measure that requires federal background checks for all sales and transfers of firearms.

CBS News reports HR 8 is the first major gun control legislation Congress has considered in almost 25 years. It passed Wednesday on a 240-190 vote.

Alaska’s sole representative, Don Young, voted against the bill, calling it “heavy-handed and ill-advised.”
