As Gov. Mike Dunleavy embarked on a series of budget talks, his first appearance on the Kenai Peninsula has possibly set the tone for the week-long roadshow.

Monday's event at the Cannery Lodge in Kenai was as much about the conversation outside the venue as it was about the presentation inside.

An hour before the meeting, dozens of people protested at a makeshift security checkpoint — the only access point for entry to the event. The rally was organized on social media by a group called"Save our State," which has planned rallies at each of Dunleavy's budget presentations this week.
