E. Jean Carroll Says Elle Magazine Fired Her After Trump Rape Accusation

2019 Glamour Women Of The Year Summit

Longtime Elle advice columnist E. Jean Carroll announced that she has been fired from the magazine and is blaming President Donald Trump.

"Because Trump ridiculed my reputation, laughed at my looks, & dragged me through the mud, after 26 years, Elle fired me. I don't blame Elle. It was the great honor of my life writing 'Ask E. Jean.' I blame @realdonaldtrump," Carroll wrote on Twitter.

Carroll accused President Trump of raping her in the 1990s, detailing her experience in her 2019 book, What Do We Need Men For?. She claimed that Trump forced her up against a wall in her in a fitting room at Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan and sexually assaulted her.

Trump called Carroll a liar and told The Hill that "she's not my type.

"Totally lying. I don't know anything about her," he said. "I know nothing about this woman. I know nothing about her. She is — it's just a terrible thing that people can make statements like that."

Carroll responded to those comments by filing a defamation lawsuit in New York state court, accusing the president of damaging her career and her reputation with his remarks.

Carroll's announcement comes as she updated her legal filing in her lawsuit to include her termination letter from Elle Executive Managing Editor Erin Hobday.

"We and your readers so appreciate your many years of work for the magazine, and the wonderful columns you contributed to our publication," the letter, which was dated December 11, said. "We will miss you tremendously."

Hearst, which publishes Elle, has not commented on their decision to fire Carroll.
