Gov. Mike Dunleavy's statewide mandate reopens some nonessential businesses Friday, but not in Anchorage. Mayor Ethan Berkowitz has added three days to the timeline.

"We figured we'd rather go slow and get it right," said Berkowitz.

Berkowitz says the municipality is still trying to work out implementation of the governor's mandate, which allows hair salons, restaurants, retailers and some other nonessential businesses to reopen, following specific safety protocols and limiting the number of customers allowed into their buildings. The mayor says he's not sure how that would work in larger-scale structures like malls.
