Amid Lockdown, Thousands Wait To Get Tested For COVID-19 In Los Angeles County

The United States set a new daily record for the number of coronavirus cases, deaths, and hospitalizations on Wednesday (December 2). According to NBC Newsthere were 205,000 new cases reported, and 2,777 people died. The COVID Tracking Project reported that the number of people hospitalized for the virus topped 100,000 for the first time since the start of the global pandemic.

The U.S. also surpassed 14 million total cases, as the daily average for the past week was 164,103, nearly 2.5 times higher than the average back in July. States across the southwest continue to see a significant increase in new cases. In the last two weeks, New Mexico has seen a 109% increase in cases, while Arizona and California have seen the number of confirmed cases rise by 90% and 75%, respectively.

"Cases are rising, hospitalizations are increasing, deaths are increasing. We need to try to bend the curve, stop this exponential increase," Dr. Henry Walke, the CDC's Covid-19 incident manager, said during a briefing.

The number of new cases is expected to rise even more in the coming weeks, with many health experts bracing for a Thanksgiving-related surge.

"I actually believe they're going to be the most difficult time in the public health history of this nation," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said.
