In Rockport, Massachusetts, a pileated woodpecker has caused damage to more than 20 vehicles, leaving residents puzzled and frustrated. The bird, described as nearly the size of a crow with distinctive black and white markings and a red crest, has been seen attacking car windshields and side mirrors.

According to resident Janelle Favaloro, the woodpecker's activity has been ongoing for weeks. She captured a photo of the bird in action, which was shared on NBC's TODAY show. Favaloro humorously described the woodpecker as a "vandal" in her neighborhood, noting its impact on at least 25 vehicles.

Ron Magill, communications director at Zoo Miami, told NBC that the woodpecker's behavior could be linked to the current breeding season. He noted that during this time, male birds often become aggressive as part of their territorial courtship displays. The woodpecker likely perceives its reflection in the car surfaces as a rival, prompting its attacks.

The pileated woodpecker, known for its striking appearance, is not typically known for such behavior, making this situation unusual. Residents are advised to cover their vehicles or park them in garages to prevent further damage.
