President Donald Trump's approval rating among men is reported to have "deteriorated most substantially," according to the latest University of Massachusetts Amherst poll released on Monday (August 4).

Trump was reported to have a 39% approval rating among male voters, a 9% decrease from the last Amherst poll conducted in April. Men supported Trump by a wider margin in his 2024 presidential election victory over former Vice President Kamala Harris than in his 2020 loss to former President Joe Biden, having narrowly won men under the age of 50, a group that had previously favored Biden by 10 points, according to PewResearch.org.

“Trump has cultivated a ‘masculine’ reputation and sought to build support among American men but, strikingly, we find that support for Trump has deteriorated most substantially among members of this group,” said Jesse Rhodes, a co-director of the poll and professor of political science at UMass Amherst. “In April, Trump enjoyed approval from 48% of men, compared with 39% of women. Now, only 39% of men express approval of Trump, compared with 35% of women.

“In addition to losing support among men, Trump has seen approval for his presidency crumble among political independents, a critical swing constituency,” Rhodes added. “While 31% of independents approved of his presidency in April, that number is now down 10 percentage points to 21%. This is really bad news for Trump, and for Republicans who depend on support from independents in close elections.”

The poll showed that Trump's overall job approval rating was at 38%, dropping 6% from the previous survey conducted in April, and his disapproval rating was at 58%, 14% higher than last reported. The University of Massachusetts Amhert poll also showed that Trump had seen a decrease in support for his handling of inflation (31% approval), immigration (41% approval), jobs (37% approval) and civil rights (32%), while also having 31% support on tariffs and 37% on natural disasters, both of which weren't included in the April survey.

“Six months into his second term as president, Donald Trump looks to be on the ropes with the American public,” said Tatishe Nteta, a co-director of the poll and provost professor of political science at UMass Amhertst. “Trump’s approval ratings, already historically low for a newly elected president, continue to sink with close to 6-in-10 Americans (58%) expressing disapproval of the job that Trump is doing in office.”

Trump was reported to have a net approval rating of -7.6%, which is the lowest of his second term in office, according to the latest poll released by ActiVote last week. The survey, which included 454 users, was released last Friday (August 1) and showed that the president had a 44.5% approval rating and a 52.1% disapproval rating
