The Anchorage School District released its proposed budget for the upcoming school year and it includes widespread reductions, mergers and adaptations to make up for a $20 million budget gap.
Among the reductions for the 2020-2021 school year are 50 teaching jobs — mostly at the elementary level. One of the driving factors is reported to be a reduction in student enrollment.
"A reduction of 50 positions doesn't mean the elimination of an individual in the district," ASD chief financial officer Jim Anderson said. "I think they'll be able to find a job, may not be at the same school that they currently work at, but knowing that we're going to have over 200-plus vacancies, I don't think teachers should worry about whether they'll find a job."
