The decades-dormant plan to build a Mat-Su-to-Anchorage commuter rail line is back on the front burner, at least for Gov. Bill Walker.

He included $4.5 million in his proposed capital budget for the project for next year, the Anchorage Daily News reports, adding that the money would come from funds earmarked for Glenn Highway repairs and the proposed bridge from Anchorage to Point MacKenzie.

With the state already looking at a chronic multibillion-dollar budget deficit we wonder whether this is the best time to add $4.5 million in spending for a rail line that all involved say will require future state subsidies, if it is ever built.
