I’m stumped as to why the Legislature and the governor are having so much trouble balancing the budget. It looks to me like a lot of game-playing may be going on.
The governor’s total proposed budget for this year is $4.6 billion. That could perhaps be reduced if we had a governor who was more willing to downsize government to something we can afford — and comparable to what we had just a few years ago.
But let’s assume the $4.6 billion is a valid number for this year and will be partially funded by $2.1 billion in anticipated revenues. That leaves a deficit of $2.5 billion presumably to be covered by drawing from the Permanent Fund’s Earnings Reserve Account.
