Anchorage Hillside resident Edward Hoppas is in trouble with the law after taking matters into his own hands and removing an illegally placed campaign sign along O'Malley Road.

The sign, advertising for State House candidate Ross Bieling, was in the right of way, violating a two-decade-old state law aimed at keeping Alaska free from outdoor advertising like billboards.

Hoppas said after a near collision with a moose calf that he couldn't see because of the sign on June 18, he began reaching out to various government agencies and Bieling's campaign, seeking to have the sign taken down.
