A preliminary magnitude 6.7 earthquake shook Anchorage and much of Southcentral Alaska Friday morning, sending workers to seek shelter beneath their desks.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake was centered just north of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

The earthquake was strong enough to knock items off store shelves and rattle homes throughout the region. Books fell off bookshelves; in the offices of the Anchorage Daily News, ceiling tiles fell.
